Hope That Holds Me
There are seasons when hope feels easy.
When prayers are being answered. When the path ahead makes sense. When life feels settled and God’s goodness is easy to recognise.
And then there are seasons when hope becomes a choice.
When circumstances haven’t changed. When the answer hasn’t come. When you don’t know what God is doing — or how the story you are living will unfold.
It is here that Psalm 91 offers us something deeper than positive thinking:
“When you abide under the shadow of Shaddai, you are hidden in the strength of God Most High. He’s the hope that holds me and the stronghold to shelter me, the only God for me, and my great confidence.”
Psalm 91:1–2 TPT
I love the words: the hope that holds me.
Because sometimes I don’t feel particularly good at holding onto hope.
But perhaps that was never the invitation.
Biblical hope is not me trying to convince myself that everything will work out exactly as I want it to. It is not denying disappointment, pain or uncertainty. And it is certainly not pretending that difficult things don’t hurt.
Hope is a Person.
His name is Jesus.
And that changes everything.
My confidence is not ultimately in a particular outcome. It is in the character of the One who holds my life.
I may not know what tomorrow looks like, but I know who will be there.
I may not understand what God is doing, but I know His heart towards me.
I may be walking through circumstances I would never have chosen, but they do not have the authority to determine whether I am secure.
Because my security is found under His shadow.
Hope begins with abiding
Psalm 91 doesn’t begin with God changing the circumstances. It begins with a place:
“When you abide…”
There is something profoundly comforting about that.
Before God invites me to understand, solve, fix, or overcome, He invites me to stay close.
To come underneath His presence.
To allow His strength to become the shelter for my weakness.
And perhaps this is where hope is restored — not by staring harder at the future, but by drawing closer to God in the present.
When my mind begins running ahead, imagining everything that could go wrong, I can return to Him.
When fear tells me I need answers before I can have peace, I can return to Him.
When disappointment whispers that God has forgotten me, I can return to Him.
Again and again.
My great confidence
There is a beautiful freedom in being able to say:
I don’t know what will happen. But I know Him.
That is hope.
Not confidence that life will always be easy, but confidence that God will always be faithful.
Not confidence in my own ability to hold everything together, but confidence that I am being held.
Today, whatever you are carrying, you do not need to manufacture hope for the entire journey ahead.
Come back under His shadow.
Stay close.
Let Him hold what you cannot.
And allow this simple truth to settle again into your heart:
He is the hope that holds me. He is my shelter. He is my great confidence.
Whatever comes, I will not walk into it alone.
Walk held, beloved.
“He’s the hope that holds me and the stronghold to shelter me, the only God for me, and my great confidence.” — Psalm 91:2 TPT
