Relinquish Control
The freedom of letting God be Lord
“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” — 2 Corinthians 3:17
Lord, I think I am beginning to understand that surrender is not something I do once.
It is something I return to.
Again and again.
Because if I am truthful, I like to know how things are going to turn out.
I like a plan.
I like certainty.
I like knowing that the people I love are going to be okay.
And when something feels uncertain — especially when it concerns the people and things closest to my heart — my instinct is often to reach for control.
I think ahead.
I rehearse conversations.
I try to anticipate outcomes.
I look for solutions.
I carry things in my mind long after I have supposedly prayed about them.
Sometimes I call it being responsible.
But sometimes, underneath it all, I think I am simply afraid to let go.
And perhaps this is where You are inviting me into a different kind of freedom.
What does it actually mean to relinquish control?
It doesn’t mean becoming passive.
It doesn’t mean that I stop caring, stop praying, stop acting wisely or stop taking responsibility for what You have entrusted to me.
Relinquishing control means recognising the difference between what You have asked me to carry and what was always Yours to carry.
I can love someone.
But I cannot control their choices.
I can pray for my children.
But I cannot write their stories.
I can steward my finances.
But I cannot guarantee tomorrow.
I can take care of my body.
But I cannot control every outcome.
I can speak truth in love.
But I cannot control how it is received.
I can obey You.
But I cannot demand that obedience produces the outcome I had imagined.
And maybe surrender begins right there.
I do what is mine to do — and I release to You what only You can do.
Where You are Lord, there is freedom
2 Corinthians 3:17 says:
“Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”
I’ve read those words many times, but lately I have been wondering:
Is there an area of my life where I want the freedom of the Holy Spirit without fully allowing Him to be Lord?
Because His freedom and His Lordship belong together.
If You are Lord, then I am no longer required to be.
That means I don’t have to carry the impossible responsibility of making everything work.
I don’t have to manipulate an outcome.
I don’t have to understand everything before I trust You.
I don’t have to keep every plate spinning.
I don’t have to live three months ahead in my mind trying to solve problems that haven’t even happened yet.
There is enormous freedom in finally saying:
Jesus, You are Lord here too.
Lord over my family.
Lord over my children.
Lord over my relationships.
Lord over my future.
Lord over my finances.
Lord over my body.
Lord over the things I understand.
And Lord over the things that make absolutely no sense to me.
Surrender is not giving something up into uncertainty
Maybe this is the part I so easily forget.
When I relinquish control, I am not simply letting go.
I am placing what I love into Someone else’s hands.
There is a difference.
Jesus said of those who belong to Him:
“No one will snatch them out of my hand.” — John 10:28
The hands I surrender into are not careless hands.
They are the hands of the One who loves completely, sees eternally and knows what I cannot know.
So perhaps surrender sounds less like:
I don’t care what happens.
And much more like:
Father, I care deeply. But I trust You more than I trust my own ability to control the outcome.
That is harder.
And far more beautiful.
Holy Spirit, be Lord again
Perhaps there are places in our lives where, without even realising it, we’ve slowly taken back control.
The thing we surrendered six months ago.
The person we placed in His hands.
The unanswered prayer.
The future we thought would look different by now.
The situation we’ve been trying to manage because waiting on God feels too vulnerable.
Maybe today is simply an invitation to bring it all back under His Lordship.
Not because He is demanding control from us.
But because He wants to free us from the exhausting illusion that we ever had it.
So today, this is my prayer:
Holy Spirit, be Lord again.
Be the greatest influence over my thoughts.
Over my emotions.
Over my reactions.
Over my decisions.
Over my expectations.
Over my relationships.
Over my family.
Over my future.
Over every part of my life that I keep trying to manage without You.
I give You the things that keep circling in my mind.
I give You the conversations I cannot control.
I give You the outcomes I desperately want.
I give You the people I love most.
I give You my fears about tomorrow.
I give You even the prayers that have not yet been answered.
Jesus, I choose You.
I choose to trust You again.
Not because I understand what You are doing.
Not because everything has suddenly worked out.
But because I know Who I am surrendering to.
Take control of my life, Holy Spirit.
All of it.
And when I find myself reaching out to take something back again, gently remind me:
This is safe with Me.
Perhaps this is what freedom looks like
Not a life where everything goes according to plan.
But a life where I no longer need everything to go according to my plan in order to have peace.
A life where I can say:
I don’t know what happens next. But I know Who holds what happens next.
Maybe relinquishing control is one of the deepest expressions of trust.
Opening our clenched hands.
Releasing the outcome.
And whispering once more:
You are Lord. I am Yours. And everything I have placed into Your hands is Yours too.
This week’s invitation
Ask Holy Spirit one simple question:
“What am I still trying to control?”
Don’t rush past the answer.
When something comes to mind, name it specifically.
Then open your hands — literally, if it helps — and pray:
Jesus, I give this back to You. I will do what You ask me to do, but I release the outcome. You are Lord here too.
And whenever you find yourself picking it up again this week, return to those words:
You are Lord here too.
Because where He is Lord, there is freedom.
And perhaps some of the freedom we’ve been asking God for begins with finally releasing what we were never meant to control.
