A Tenacious Resolve to Keep My Eyes on You

“As the time approached for Him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.”
— Luke 9:51 NIV

There is something about that word resolutely that keeps drawing me back.

Jesus knew what lay ahead. Jerusalem wasn’t the easy road. It was the road of surrender, suffering and ultimately the cross.

And still, He set His face towards it.

He wasn’t distracted by the voices around Him. He wasn’t governed by what He could see or by how difficult the road appeared.

His heart was settled.

His eyes were on the Father.

And perhaps this is the invitation for me too.

Not necessarily for my circumstances to change this week, but for my focus to change within them.

Because I’m learning how easily circumstances can become the loudest thing in my life.

The unanswered prayer.
The uncertainty.
The thing I cannot fix.
The outcome I desperately want to control.

Before I know it, I’m studying the problem more closely than I’m studying the face of Jesus.

But faith invites me somewhere different.

“We look away from the natural realm and we focus our attention and expectation onto Jesus.”
— Hebrews 12:2 TPT

Look away.

There is such intention in those words.

Sometimes keeping my eyes on Jesus requires a tenacious resolve to keep turning my attention back to Him.

Again.

And again.

And again.

Not because the circumstances aren’t real.

But because they are not more real than He is.

I don’t need to understand everything to trust Him.

I don’t need to know how He is going to answer to keep walking with Him.

And I don’t need to see the breakthrough before I decide where my gaze will rest.

This week, I want to become beautifully stubborn about one thing:

Jesus, I will keep my eyes on You.

When fear tries to pull my attention towards what could go wrong — I will look at You.

When disappointment makes me question what You are doing — I will look at You.

When I’m tempted to manufacture an outcome — I will return to You.

When nothing seems to be changing — I will remain with You.

Because perhaps radical faith isn’t always doing something dramatic.

Perhaps sometimes it simply looks like a woman who has decided:

My circumstances will not determine where I fix my gaze.

Jesus did not wander towards Jerusalem.

He set His face towards it.

And I want that same holy resolve.

Not a striving resolve.

Not I must make this happen.

But a surrendered resolve that says:

Whatever happens around me, I know where my heart belongs.

This week’s invitation

What if we stopped giving our circumstances so much permission to determine our peace?

What if, every time our minds begin running ahead, we gently bring them back to Jesus?

Again and again.

Until looking towards Him becomes our first response rather than our last resort.

Lord, give me a tenacious resolve this week to keep my eyes fixed on You. When circumstances compete for my attention, draw me back to Your face. Quiet the need in me to understand, control or fix everything. Centre my heart on Yours. I choose You above the outcome. You above the answer. You above what I can see. Teach me to walk with my face set towards You—steady, surrendered and undistracted. Amen.

Point to ponder:
I live radically when my heart is centred on God, regardless of what is happening around me.
